Perhaps the problem is that while Greatest Hits is a fine, listenable portrait of Ice Cube the sometime hitmaker and full-time hip-hop celebrity, it doesn't completely capture the provocative, incendiary qualities that made him an icon in the first place (for that, listeners will have to go back to AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted and Death Certificate). As a storyteller (a facet of his work that's underrepresented here), Cube had a knack for keenly observed detail, as evidenced on "Once Upon a Time in the Projects" and his laid-back masterpiece "It Was a Good Day." Still, it doesn't quite add up to a truly classic compilation. Dre on "Natural Born Killaz." With a record deal gone sour in 2008 Lane proved that you could take ones innocence and try to leave like a kinlen for the coal, but the harder the life the sweeter the song.
As Bocephus said: "You can't fake it if you're gonna make it, you gotta live it." Often times compared to a wild horse running on the plains, the long road to Lane as we know has been all but eventful at times.
The characters in the songs, more times than none biographical, always tend to be relatable allowing his reputation as an artist/songwriter to grow in turn giving the listener a sense of wealth. Hailing from the Gulf coast of south Louisiana, Lanes songs speak of high lonesome stories tapping into God, sin, love, family, hardships, misconnections, highs and lows in a Lynyrd Skynyrd grit and Bob Seger drifter acoustic kind of way. With a vibe primarily based off of southern roots, this rock n' roll cowboy has earned and gained the respect of music lovers ranging from rock to country to blues. He connects to ordinary working people through lyrics that make a simple testament to their dreams, aspirations and hopes.
